Irish lesbian author shortlisted for the Booker Prize

Canadian based Irish author Emma Donoghue has been shortlisted for this year's Booker prize for her latest novel "Room."

I'm not familiar with Donoghue's work but she has written a lot of lesbian themed fiction in the past and has won many LGBT literary awards.

She is the bookmaker's favourite for the prestigious Booker prize.

Hey everyone!

Its finally here! I can confirm that the first cookery demo will take place in the Other Place at 7:30pm on Tuesday 28th September 2010.

There is a small cover charge of �4 towards the Other Place and the cost of ingredients also.

Here is the programme for the night:

7:30pm Meet and greet in the cafe and then on to the members area

7:45pm Introduction and handing out of recipe sheets

8:00pm Cookery demo of all dishes on menu, followed by tasting of all dishes

This demo will include some basic but tasty dishes easy to do, quick and budget friendly.

Deja vu....does it happen to you?

I had yet another deja vu experience yesterday. Only something small, involving two cars and myself driving in convoy down the motorway....three cars on their way back from Macra officer training up the country.

So I wanted to ask.....how aware of Deja Vu are you?

About the April 2003 before I went to college I had a dream about walking down a pavement with a busy road next to me, and I didn't recognise the place, but felt completely comfortable. I met a few people who were walking in the opposite direction who I didn't recognise, but I felt I knew. Only I couldn't say 'hi'...or anything else! I couldn't/wouldn't talk! I wanted to say something, but I nothing was coming out, so was just able to nod to them.
It was really weird, but completely realistic in every way. It was so vivid that I could recall it perfectly when I woke up.

Didn't really think too much more of it.....figured it was just one of those dreams.

Went off to college in Limerick September 2003, and as you do, started to get to know about half my year.....only about 200 people or so like. It helped that I was living in a hostel off the Dock Rd that had about 70 of us first years together, along with a few others. Got into the whole college routine. I felt like I should know some of the people in the hostel with me, like I'd met them before or something, or must know their family. We were from all over the country though, so I didn't think much more of it.

November 2003, and the college was fundraising for Chernobyl. At that stage I'd gotten to know so many people that I figured I'd help out by doing a 24 hr silence. Not too many thought I was capable of it, so got a good bit of sponsorship.

Went silent at around midnight Tues 11th Nov. Was up til about 4am watching tv and stuff while most others went on the usual Tuesday college night out. Wasn't saying a word. When everyone was back, had the craic, but didn't speak.
Woke up the next morning, bag of college stuff on my back, set off along the Dock Rd, busy traffic, and met a few pals coming the other way that I couldn't say hi to, only nod....and as soon as they had passed me, my jaw dropped. Stayed silent, but finally knew why Cliona, Conor, and others had always seemed so familiar.

I recognised them in September, because of dreaming about November, while sleeping in April.

There have been arguments that never happened because I remembered a dream JUST at the start of a Deja vu moment....in time to stop myself saying the words that kicked off the argument.
I wonder if altering the future breaks the universe?

Lack of sleep at the time of dreaming, and fraught emotions at the time dreamed of seem to be the things that go with my most detailed deja vus.

Didn't make it to the end of that day with the sponsored silence because not long after going into college I was rung and told that a school friend had died. Fraught.

Well done for making it to the end...

Well we decided to re-open Ruby's one Sunday a month to offer an extra Club night to the scene monthly. Alot of people who work Saturday's miss the fun of Fridays at Ruby's so for those of you We are opening This Sunday the 12th for one night only.

We will offer you cheaper drink deals on all pints and Vodka & dash as like Chambers now on Sundays and midweek.

If successfull and supported we will open 1 night per month as an extra to add more choice to the gay scene in Cork.

Today Kilkenny are playing Tipperary in the GAA Hurling Final. If Kilkenny win they will become the first county ever to win the final five years in a row.

For one guy this game will mean a lot more than just another Kilkenny victory. Five years ago he put �50 on Kilkenny winning five in a row, the odds where 1000-1. Therefore if Kilkenny wins today he can collect his winnings totaling �50,000.

There are many stories of people putting money on seemingly ridiculous and impossible bets that turned out to happen. Does anyone know of anymore of these stories?[:-?]

Lets face it we all love when stars have a good rant at the expense of another star however usually there is cause, some reason to make them explode. France is currently divided in a battle of loyalties as two of their icons went head to head.

Gerard Depardieu when speaking to an Austrian magazine went into an unrelated spout of verbal diahorea when he began critizing French star Juillet Binoche. He went on to ask the interviewer what they thought the secret of Binoche was? Why she was held in such esteem? He finished his verbal attack by saying 'she has nothing. Absolutely nothing'. He went on to praise fellow actresses Fanny Ardant and Isabella Adjani but again knocked Binoche.
A bewildered Binoche claims she didn't really know Depardieu and is at a loss to understand where this is all came from. She did say 'I think it has to do with himself. Theres something going on and I provoked him without knowing I provoked him, I think."
She went on to say the actor was obviously threatened by her success and 'his masculinity is threatened by films that give prime roles to women'.

There in however lyes its own mystery, Binoche and Depardieu are screen legends in France and in a small cinema industry you would have expected them to at least have appeared side by side once. They haven't.

Does this feud go back farther and hint at something more.
She is undeniably one of the most beautiful actresses to emmerge from France and he is one of the toughest.

Everyone loves for even a moment a bad boy, did Miss Binoche fall for his rough edges and spurn him when he didn't meet her obvious intellect.
Did she just spurn him altogether!
Is it jealousy that he has never won an oscar and she has?

One can only speculate but this feud doesn't seem to be going away and is causing much upset to French cinema goers who idolise their stars.

I'm definately backing Binoche on this one, she would knock the Ardants and Adjani's off the screen any day.
As for Depardieu I hear the bottle has become his favourite solace, quelle surprise! [:-D]

Eurovision Diva Niamh Kavanagh set to take Limerick Pride 2010 by storm

Iconic singer and Eurovision diva Niamh Kavanagh will top the bill at Limerick Pride. The songstress will be playing an emotive and upbeat set at La Boutique in Dolans Warehouse on Saturday September 11th.

The gig will be the climax of a packed week of festivities ending in the Pride Parade and the gig in Dolans.

�We have a very exciting show this year for Limerick Pride,� said Producer Nicole Dunphy. �It is amazing to have Niamh, but she will not be the only icon on stage, we also have Miss Heidi Hotlips and Sheila Fits Patrick and Madonna Lucia who have hosted the show since Limerick Pride went stellar three years ago.�

Described as the �Rolls Royce of Irish singers�, Niamh Kavanagh has appeared twice for Ireland at the Eurovision finals.

I suppose it primeraly acted as a mask when i first went "out" out in cork; but i do believ, it can be hot when used correctly! Not sure if there's a thread to this effect already on here, but meh. Couldn't find one, so thought I'd make one.

What are you most afraid of in the whole world? Is it a possible or potential event, is it a phobia, or is it something else entirely? Have you tried to overcome it, do you plan to, or are you trying to at the moment?

For me, it's spiders (and, to a lesser extent, moths and other such nasties). Even a picture of a spider is enough to make me want to vomit, and if I see an actual spider (like some of the huge ones that have been lurking about at the moment), I will literally scream. Or at least whimper quite audibly. And even when suitably armed with a hoover, I'll still be quite afraid of the feckers.

I can haz balls plz? xD
